The Thinking Home Business blog shares ideas, experience and tips for men and women professionals already working from home and those who are interested in the possibility of doing so.

Des Walsh, author, Thinking Home BusinessHi

Thanks for visiting!

(Video is 2 mins 5 secs)

I’m Des Walsh. I’m a social media strategist, business coach and LinkedIn specialist.

My business passion is to help business owners and entrepreneurs get the edge in this highly competitive, rapidly changing world of ours. I do that through my coaching and my social media strategizing.

I live on the southern Gold Coast on Australia’s East coast.

Australia map with pin for Des Walsh locationActually, to be more precise, I live on an island in the Tweed River in the north of the State of New South Wales but it’s easier to say “the Gold Coast” because most Aussies have an idea of where that is and I would bet that only a relatively small number could tell you where the Tweed is.

I am thankful each and every day that the wonders of technology allow me to live in this beautiful place and have a global business from my desktop.

I used to be a senior executive in the public sector, with responsibility for multi-million dollar national projects in education, cultural development and major event planning.

One day I decided I’d had enough of big city offices and office politics (not to mention the ducking and diving involved in working for various governments and trying to keep everyone happy!) I decided I wanted to chance my arm and set up my own business. I think it’s fair to say I had been pretty good at what I did, as indicated by my promotion career till then, from base grade clerk to senior executive, but as I got higher up in the pecking order the politics got more murky: I remember saying to a few people at the time that I was tired of living on my wits and wanted to use my brain again!

So I left the security of the public service and launched out in business on my own.

I admit that sometimes I’ve missed the benefits of that world, the long, full salary holidays, the car, the credit card for entertainment (strictly official of course), the travel, the sick leave buffer, the relative security of employment, the generous superannuation (retirement) benefits  and other perks. But truly I’ve never really looked back.

And from the outset I wanted to work from home, and did. As time has gone by, technology and changing attitudes have made that a more and more efficient thing to do.

It’s also become more socially acceptable to work from a home office. I remember a time when people in business looked down on you if you worked from home. Nowadays there’s a good chance they’ll be jealous!

You can find out more about me from my LinkedIn profile and Facebook. I also have a business page on Facebook where I share stuff about social media, coaching and how to get the most from your LinkedIn membership (hint: “likes” are always welcome!).

Those and various other presences of mine on the social web (Twitter, Google+, Slideshare and so on) at my XeeMe page.

Certified Social Media Strategist from the Social Media AcademyMy professional focus these days is on helping businesses – especially in professional services – navigate the social web, strategically and effectively. I say I want my customers to become savvy players on the social web, not roadkill. As a Certified Social Media Strategist I use advanced methodologies to show businesses how to go beyond short term social networking tactics and create a sustainable, long-term, effective presence on the social web.

Graduate School of CoachingI’m also an experienced business coach and I love working with true entrepreneurs who like to move fast rather than just tagging along with the general business crowd. If you are interested in that, I offer a complimentary, no-obligation conversation to see whether there might be a fit between your business needs and what I do.

If you think you might like to work with me, feel free to contact me via one of the options on my Contact page. I only work with people I believe I can help and where there is a values “fit”, so there is no chance I’m going to try a hard sell! I’m always happy to have a no-obligation chat to see if there is some potential synergy.

About this site

I started this Thinking Home Business site back in 2004: you can check out the wonderful Wayback Machine on archive.org to see how the site looked then.

My Des Walsh dot Com blog has a stronger focus on social media than does this site.

Whether you have been working from home for a while, are just launching your home based business or are still at the thinking about it phase, this Thinking Home Business site has been created for you.

My personal experience has been that the benefits of working from home have consistently outweighed the benefits I enjoyed before I took the leap of faith to start working for myself. Apart from anything else, I know that working from home has been far more beneficial for my mental, physical and spiritual health.

I believe too that in the twenty plus years since I set up my first home based business I’ve learned a few things about this way of doing business, and on this site I share some of that in the hope that it will help others.

My business has always been about communication and I love helping businesses communicate better about their products and services. If anything you find here can help you with that, I will feel well rewarded for any effort I have put in.

To your success!

Des
