I think that working from home is one of the hardest things out there, one has to be so disciplined and motivated, then there are the kids that will eventually become a distraction at some point,

Hello again,

I think that the family thing is one of the biggest hurdles simply because people think working from home means having more time. It may in the future, but not until you have worked hard enough, and in a disciplined enough way, to get your business totally consistent.

This is why working from home is such a shock to so many people, they hear the phrase 'working from home' and only take in the 'from home' part.

Sahails last blog post..Only Type A Workers Can Get Sick…

This post got me thinking about all kinds of stuff. The biggest obstacle is the mindset being negative, our own self-judgement.

The easiest way to see how it is 'just another hurdle' is to look at those who make it against all odds (family to support, no experience, no time etc.). This shows how much of the issue is mental.

Just started my blog, glad to see I'm not alone out here!

@ Yvonne
Interestingly, a day or so after posting this I noticed someone on Twitter saying they had to have a chat with their children about not disturbing them while they were working.

@ Hannah
I think most or all of us can relate to that. One thing I find that is useful is at the beginning of the day to give myself a list of 3-5 important things that I feel I can reasonably get done in the day and make a commitment to myself to do them. And if I don't get through them all I get at least some done, which is better than none!

@Hideyuki
Thank you. Glad to be helpful. On the self-judgement, I believe it is really important to not "beat ourselves up" when we don't perform to the standards we might have set for myself. One thing I was thinking could be good to do would be to sit down with a colleague and share some goals for say 6 months hence and ask them to meet with us again then, so we can share our own "performance review". And if we don't have any friends we can do that with, maybe we need to get out more! :)

@atul
Thanks for sharing that. I must confess I left it far too long before I got around to really understanding a balance sheet. And I agree with not buying the latest software.

Some of my experiences
1. I went through a programmed learning course "How to read a balance sheet" an International Labor Organization publication ages ago and always recommended it. Everyone has thanked me for that recco, it is a simple course book costing about $6 and takes you quite high.
2. About computer systems, don't run and buy Windows Vistas or something more advanced just because it is the latest. Usually anything latest in software also comes with the latest bugs. Usually there are early warnings of a technical problem which we tend to ignore.
