A couple of other things came to my mind reading this ...something about the unused path and going to the house of a friend ...

They are not really that relevant but that quote called to mind both Robert Frost's "The Road not Taken"

"Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,"

and this item from Ralph Waldo Emerson

"If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap, than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door."

Bill Austin

Thank you for reminding me how invaluable my friends are. Last week I made the time to call an old friend, last month the father of a friend I had lost contact with, and both times felt vitalized after our conversations. As the years pass, my crises change, but genuine friendship does not. I owe someone else a call-someone who considered me her best friend the last time I talked to her over a year ago.
